Titles (Rolling)
Up

As a grand finale to our work with Premiere, let's learn how to add a rolling title to our movie, just like the ones that we see at the end of almost every commercial movie or TV show.

As you may have noticed, the title window contains a rolling title tool that we have not yet used - let's use it now. Make a new title and save it right away with a name like 'credits'. Select the rolling title tool and then draw a rectangle just inside the inner dashed guide.

Type your titles, being careful not to let the lines spread beyond the right margin (assuming that you intend to scroll the text up, called a roll, rather than horizontally, called a crawl). Type many lines, allowing the text to continue beyond the height of the rectangle, causing the text to scroll. The image below shows only the first few lines from a total of about 20. When you have set up the text the way you want, you can preview the rolling type by dragging the slider at the bottom left corner of the Title window.

Although rolling titles usually scroll upwards, you can can scroll down, left or right if you prefer, using Title>Rolling Title Options. This menu item also allows you to set special timings - for my example a pre-roll time (time before the text starts scrolling) and the post-roll time (time after the text stops scrolling) could usefully be set to about 3 seconds (90 frames in our project). The ramp-up and ramp-down times are the times that the text takes to accelerate and decelerate, so increasing these times makes the text motion smoother.

When you are satisfied with the rolling title, save it then add it to your project. Drag it to the end of track Video 2 (assuming you want the title to have a transparent background) and extend it using the selection tool. How many seconds should be allowed for the rolling titles? This is an important question since rendering the title may take several minutes and thus you don't want to get this wrong and have to render a second time. I suggest you allow about 10 seconds for every 30 words. For example, if your rolling title contains 60 words then I suggest you adjust the rolling title to span  20 seconds in the timeline.

To preview the rolling title, hold down the the Alt key and drag the playhead across the rolling title in the timeline. When it is time to export your movie, don't be surprised if the rendering of the rolling title takes many minutes, for many frames will have to be calculated.
