Adjustment Layer
Up
Do you remember how difficult it was to use the Levels and Curves controls? They are so difficult that you might not quite get the right effect with them, and might want to come back to those adjustments to change them. Unfortunately, if you use the History window to step back to the stage where you were using these controls, you will lose all the changes that you made since then. Is there a solution? Yes - use an adjustment layer.

When you are about to use the Curves or Levels control (and some others too) think about adding an adjustment layer before you use the control (Layer>New>Adjustment Layer). In that way, you can adjust the setting of the control at any time, just by double-clicking the name of the adjustment layer. The adjustment layer affects all the other layers underneath it.

The adjustment layer has other functions, too - see the Help system for more.
