Adding a table

Professional web page designers make frequent use of tables to control page layout, so tables are much more important in FrontPage than they are in Word. You may often be looking at tables on a web page without realizing it, however, for the table borders are often hidden. Did you realize that you are looking at a borderless table right now? I used a one-cell table on this page to limit the width of the text - otherwise the lines might have been rather long and difficult to read.

The procedure for adding a table in FrontPage is very similar to the procedure in Word:

  1. Click the location in the page where you wish to insert the table.

  2. Click and drag the 'Insert Table' icon to set the number of rows and columns required.

If you want to hide the table borders then right-click the table, choose table properties, then set the border thickness to zero. Many other properties of the table or individual cells can be set in a similar way.

By the way, a web-page feature called frames was quite popular until a few years ago but frames made it difficult to navigate websites or to print content as desired so frames are rarely used now and tables are used instead.

Adding a Hit Counter

A hit counter (such as the one at the top of this page), keeps track of the number of times a particular page has been visited. To add a hit counter to a page, click the page at the spot where you wish to place the counter, then choose Insert > Component > Hit Counter (Compteur d'Acces). Choose a style for the counter, then click OK. The hit counter will not necessarily appear with a number until it has been published - you may just see the words 'Hit Counter' instead. Hit counters are more meaningful if accompanied by the date that they were installed, since this allows for a calculation of visitors per week. One last point - don't try to install a hit counter in the shared border which appears at the top of every page.

Add a scrolling text 'marquee'

Scrolling text is text that moves sideways across the screen. To add a marquee to your welcome page, open the welcome page in page view, click where you want to insert the marquee, then choose Insert > Component > Marquee (Insertion > Composant > Texte Défilant). Type a short sentence such as 'Welcome to my web site' (don't give people headaches by including too much moving text in your web site) and set other properties as you wish. The marquee will not scroll in Normal mode but if you switch to Preview (Aperçu) mode using the tab at the bottom of the screen then you should see the text scroll. If it doesn't work then switch back to normal mode, make the marquee less wide and try Preview mode again. Don't forget to switch back to Normal mode after previewing the effect - you cannot make changes to any page that is open in Preview mode.
